CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard Donovan Mitchell to a multi-year contract extension, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman announced today.
“Donovan has embodied exactly what it means to represent the Cleveland Cavaliers on and off the floor,” said Altman. “From day one, he embraced this organization, our fans, and our community. Through SPIDACARES and his work with the team, he’s made a lasting impact on this city that reaches far beyond basketball. He’s been clear in his desire to be here, and that speaks volumes about who he is. His leadership, competitive fire and professionalism have helped define our culture and the standard for wearing a Cavaliers uniform. Securing Donovan long term reflects our shared vision and our commitment to building toward another NBA championship in Cleveland.”
Mitchell appeared in 70 games (all starts) this past season for Cleveland, averaging 27.9 points (seventh-best in NBA), 5.7 assists (23rd in NBA), 4.5 rebounds and 1.49 steals (14th in NBA) in 33.5 minutes. He was also selected to his seventh NBA All-Star appearance (fourth as a Cavalier), joining LeBron James (10-times), Brad Daugherty (five times), Mark Price (four times) and Kyrie Irving (four times) as the only players in Cavs history to earn four or more NBA All-Star selections while playing for Cleveland. Mitchell scored 20 points or more on 55 occasions (10th-most in NBA), including 34 games with at least 30 points (fourth-most in NBA) and six 40-point performances (fifth-most in NBA), and posted five double-doubles. Mitchell connected on 224 three-pointers (tied for 10th in NBA), the third-most in Cavaliers history, trailing only his own records of 245 in 2023-24 and 233 in 2024-25. He was also named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for Nov. 17-23 and was the only player in the conference to average over 27.0 points on a .480 clip from the field and .360 mark from beyond the arc. He also led the NBA in second-half scoring (15.9 PPG) and ranked fourth in fourth-quarter points per game (7.7 PPG). The 6-3 guard earned All-NBA Second Team honors this past season as well, marking his third career All-NBA selection, all coming with the Cavaliers. He also became the second player in Cavaliers history to average at least 27.0 points per game in multiple seasons, joining James (seven times).
Additionally, Mitchell helped lead the Cavaliers to an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals this past season, the Cavs first appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals since 2018. It marked Mitchell’s first career appearance in the Conference Finals and ninth consecutive playoff appearance. During the 2026 Playoffs, he averaged 26.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.17 steals in 36.2 minutes over 18 games (all starts). He scored 30 or more points in six postseason games and contributed a playoff-high 43 points on 13-26 (.500) shooting from the field, five rebounds and one steal in 37 minutes in a Game 4 win over Detroit on May 11, 2026. He was also the second player in Cavs postseason history (minimum 10 games) to average at least 26.0 points in two or more postseasons (29.6 PPG in 2024), joining James (eight times).
Since joining the Cavaliers in 2022, Mitchell already ranks second in both 30-point games (105) and 40-point games (25) and owns the second-highest career scoring average in franchise history (26.7), behind only James (27.2). The No. 13 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft holds career averages of 25.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.39 steals in 33.8 minutes over 609 games (601 starts) in nine NBA seasons with Cleveland and Utah. Mitchell’s 1,842 career three-pointers are the fourth-most in the NBA since 2017-18 and he currently has the highest regular season win percentage among Cavaliers players with at least 200 games played (.682, 180-84). Mitchell has also appeared in 81 postseason games (all starts) over his career, holding averages of 27.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.32 steals in 36.7 minutes. His playoff scoring average of 27.8 points ranks as the seventh-highest postseason scoring average in NBA history behind Michael Jordan (33.4), Luka Doncic (30.9), Allen Iverson (29.7), Kevin Durant (29.3), Jerry West (29.1), and LeBron James (28.2).
