CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers have re-signed guard Sam Merrill to a multi-year contract, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.
Merrill (6-4, 205) appeared in a career-high 71 games (four starts) for the Cavaliers this past season, averaging 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.75 steals in 19.7 minutes while shooting .372 from the three-point line (137-368 3FG). His 137 made triples were the third-most on the Cavaliers and tied for 12th in the NBA among reserves. Merrill also ranked third in the NBA in +/- off the bench (+330).
The fifth-year guard recorded a career-high tying 27 points on 9-13 (.692) shooting from the three-point line in 23 minutes off the bench on Feb. 2 at Dallas. His nine triples were his career-high for three-pointers in a game. He also became just the fourth player in Cavaliers history to make nine or more three-pointers in a single game (Kyrie Irving, Darius Garland and C.J. Miles), and the first to do so off the bench.
Over his five NBA seasons, Merrill has appeared in 173 regular season contests (seven starts) with Milwaukee, Memphis and Cleveland and holds career averages of 6.5 points and 1.9 rebounds in 16.3 minutes while shooting .386 from the three-point line (313-810 3FG). He also appeared in 26 career playoff games (three starts) with Milwaukee and Cleveland and was a member of the Bucks 2020-21 NBA Championship team. Merrill joined the Cavaliers organization prior to the 2022-23 season as a member of the Cleveland Charge before signing a 10-day contract with the Cavaliers in March of 2023. He was originally selected by the New Orleans Pelicans in the second round (60th overall) of the 2020 NBA Draft, after four seasons at Utah State (2016-2020).
